Introduction: 9:30 - 9:45 (15 minutes)
We'll kick things off with a brief introduction to the course.
Session 1: 9:45 - 10:30 (45 minutes)
In this session, we will explore the important legal aspects of drawing blood and placing IV lines (two key procedures in healthcare). Topics include:
- What healthcare practitioners need to know
- The importance of being skilled and responsible
- Keeping accurate records
- Understanding the concept of vicarious liability
- The significance of getting patient consent
Session 2: 10:30 - 11:15 (45 minutes)
Here, we will discuss why infections can occur during these procedures. We’ll cover:
- Factors related to the patient and the environment
- Techniques to maintain cleanliness
- How to prevent and manage infections
- Recognizing hazards for practitioners
- Guidelines for handling samples
- Scoring for visual signs of complications related to IVs
Session 3: 11:15 - 12:00 (45 minutes)
This session will provide an overview of the circulatory and venous systems, including:
- The role of arteries and tiny blood vessels
- How our skin functions
- The processes of narrowing and widening blood vessels
- Reasons for taking blood samples
- How to choose the best site for samples
- Tips for calming anxious patients during procedures
Lunch Break: 12:00 - 12:30 (30 minutes)

Session 4: 12:30 - 1:15 (45 minutes)
In this session, we will focus on selecting the right tools for the job, including:
- Different needle sizes and their uses
- How to use a tourniquet effectively
- Safety measures related to needles

- How to prevent and manage complications
Session 5: 1:15 - 5:15 (240 minutes)
This will be the hands-on portion of the course, including:
- A practical demonstration of blood drawing and IV placement by the trainer
- An opportunity for you to practice these skills
- An assessment to evaluate your skills in these procedures
Course Summary: 5:15 - 5:30 (15 minutes)
